ANIMAL RACING
Some people canât seem to get enough of gambling on the performances of animals. Betting on boxing, poker, or the stock market isnât enough for them. Theyâre not satisfied unless theyâre watching dogs or horses run around a track. Although the practice dates back to 4500 BCE, when horses were first domesticated, the modern popularity of animal racing is almost entirely rooted in betting on which animal will win. When bookmaking was banned in the United States in the early 1900s, horse racing almost disappeared completely. In 1908, only twenty-five racetracks remained in the entire country.
In 2017, the animals most commonly raced were horses and dogs (particularly greyhounds). Death and injuries are common during and after these races. PETA estimates that three thoroughbred horses die every day in North America from injuries during races. The numbers from greyhounds arenât much better, with one dying every three days. The injuries that lead to these deaths are often catastrophic, including fractured skulls, spinal injuries, and electrocution. Many of the animals also die of heart attacks due to the incredible strain on their cardiovascular systems. They also suffer side effects from the use of performance-enhancing drugs, including steroids, cocaine, and ecstasy, which are forced upon them.
Even the animals that are not injured while training or racing donât have much hope for a happy ending. Once they stop winning races, most animals are euthanized, as their owners donât want to pay to feed and provide health care for animals that arenât bringing in money. These âretiredâ animals are usually sold to labs for medical experiments, slaughtered to make dog food and glue, or exported to countries like Japan where their flesh is considered a delicacy; only the luckiest are retired to pasture or put up for adoption.
